Market At Dothan / Last Order for 2016

Wishing You and Yours A

Happy Birthday Chloe

It’s almost a typical Saturday at my house. I’ve sequestered all the honey in a small room with a heater to keep it warm enough not to granulate. Part of the animals have been fed. We’ve already had two visitors this morning. We’re enjoying the last of the satsumas from the tree in the flower bed. There’s a Frazier fir wrapped in twine in the living room waiting to be set up and decorated. And my Chloe is 10 years old today.

I try not to mix the various parts of my life too much, but many of you probably know that my husband and I are German Shepherd lovers. Chloe has been with us the longest. Right after my Mr.’s heart surgery he announced one day that he wanted a dog to go on his daily (rehab) walks with him. And he wanted a BIG dog. He wanted a Shepherd.

So the search began. He found an ad in the newspaper about someone needing to re-home their white GSD (German Shepherd Dog.) Hats off to this lovely family for their responsible wisdom as they INTERVIEWED the interested respondents to determine the best home for their beautiful dog. And we were chosen. Chloe came home with us a few days later and life at the Horton house has not been the same since.

That was 6 plus years ago. It set us on a journey that wound up changing our lives. Chloe is the only one of our GSD’s who is loyal to me above my husband. Here on the farm she’s a friend, a protector, and a great companion. She loves people, gets along good with the other critters, still likes to harass the horses, and will roll around in the grass out of sheer joy just like she did when she first came home. Happy Birthday Sweet Girl! You were a Christmas blessing to someone ten years ago and are a blessing to me every day!

Make Ahead Breakfast Casserole
from Richter Farms

1# Sausage
6 eggs
6 slices bread, cubed
2 c milk
2 c shredded Cheddar Cheese
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground dry mustard

Place sausage in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, and set aside.

Layer bread cubes, sausage and Cheddar cheese in a lightly greased 13×9 baking dish. In a bowl, beat together eggs, milk, salt and mustard. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cube mixture. Cover, and refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight. You can cook right away if you forgot to make ahead but the texture is much better if you refrigerate overnight.

Remove the casserole from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Preheat oven to 350F.

Bake 50-60 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Market at Dothan Thanksgiving 2016 Issue

Dothan’s Sustainable Market is Now Open

UPDATE ON HAITI

Kirsty and Mackenzie returned from Haiti last week. Their visit to the island was an intense two weeks accessing the needs of the village and formulating a game plan to maximize the recovery effort for the farmers and farmer’s cooperative of Petit Trou.

In their initial efforts, Kirsten and MacKenzy have been working with the local leaders to organize and prioritize where aid money should go.  Those who had their homes decimated are at the top of the list.  Many volunteers worked to get supplies up the hillsides where the trucks could not travel and homes were hardest hit.  Also a top priority is the construction of tree nurseries.  With the additional money that Market at Dothan raised this past week, we will have more than fully funded one of those nurseries.  These nurseries are vital to the local economy because Haitians depend heavily on fruit trees for food.  These trees take years to bear fruit, so the money we raised will be put into action as soon as possible to build a nursery and plant trees.

THANK YOU for your part in making this happen! Kirsty and Mackenzie have not had a chance to update the blog at Haitians For Change yet but feel free to check out who they are and their work creating and now helping rebuild a sustainable farming community in this country. We at Market at Dothan are proud to stand with them and will continue to accept donations and seeds for rebuilding.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away! At my house our goal is to have the dining room back by that time so we can use the table. As it is there is still a lot of clutter to “unpack” and deal with from recent repairs. Only last night we moved five (5!) full size bookcases out of there.

With Thanksgiving in mind, be sure to read the Vendor remarks in the following section for the wonderful foods they are offering this week that are sure to make your preparations healthier and happier. I practically drooled reading the product description of Sweet Acre’s Pecan Pie Cheesecake.

For fun and inspiration we are sharing some fun Thanksgiving photo ideas in this newsletter.

Don’t forget about CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, December 1, 3pm – 7 pm. Order pickup will take place that day instead of Friday morning and our vendors will be on site with produce, vegetables and many goods to help get your Christmas season off to a good start. Make plans to join us!

Welcome November!

Avalon Farms is Back!

This and That

Have you been outside today? Drought aside, the weather is MARVELOUS! We’ve had a busy day. A nice family from Marianna brought their son up to meet our dogs this morning. There’s a lady training four legged critters under the big pecan tree by the barn. So far the Mr. and I have got about 1000 of 3000 strawberry plugs in the ground. It’s a good day to be a farmer!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our Market vendors and I are having fun planning and plotting our Christmas Open House this year. It will be Thursday, December 1, 3pm to 7pm in sync with Dothan Nursery’s annual Christmas Open House. This is always a fun and festive event. The Nursery provides refreshments and our farmers will have grills going with samples of all sorts of wonderful foods. This year we are inviting a few outside vendors whose food related products are guaranteed to make Open House THE place for wholesome sustainable foods and gifts.

I am beyond excited to announce AVALON FARMS IS BACK!!!!!! Those of you who have been with the Market a long time will remember Wendy and her delicious vegetables. Be sure to read her blurb in the Vendor section.

Thank you to everyone who continues to give to the Haiti Relief Fund. Kirsty and Mackenzie, the couple spearheading the assistance to the farmers co-op in Petit Trou, are still in Haiti. Electronic communication is still out of the question from there but we hope to get a report after they return next week.

Blessings of Fall

Food and Fresh Air

Many of you know that here at the Horton house we’ve been going through some much needed home repairs/renovation/remodeling. If you’ve ever lived through something like that while living IN your home you know how taxing it can be on every day life.

We have not sat at a table to eat for about three weeks now. And we haven’t been able to pile up in front of the television with a plate either. What has made this bearable, and even enjoyable is the screen porch. It’s not fancy but the seating is comfy, the charm is rustic and the conversation is good. It has been THE sanity saver around here.

So the following photo is my personal wink and nod of gratitude to food and fresh air. My husband’s Norwegian relatives (300 miles above the Artic Circle) eat outdoors at EVERY opportunity, and with it permitting a lot for us these days, why not?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our Market vendors work hard to list accurate quantities of what they have available each week. It’s one of the reasons we encourage everyone to order as close to Market opening as possible. It’s also the reason that if you order an item with a 0 or negative quantity you might not receive that item. We work hard to keep that from happening, but just in case . . . now you know!

There are several vendor announcements in this week’s Market section. We hope you’ll take advantage of the FRESHNESS!

Haiti Relief is ongoing and we’re happy to report that donations continue to come in. This week Chris will be shipping a large quantity of seed to the farmers coop of Petit Trou de Nippes. Thank you Sandy Farms for your part in this!

Be sure to keep an eye on the Market schedule as we approach the holidays. Our last November pickup date will be Nov. 18 which is the Friday before Thanksgiving. The next pickup date will the Thursday, December 1 at Dothan Nursery’s annual Christmas Open House. Our farmers will be here in person with treats, samples and lots of items to help get your Christmas Season off to a good start.

If you 1) LOVE candles 2) Love having the air in your home clean, fresh & relaxing 3) Need to help rid an area of unpleasant odors, beeswax candles are for you!. Burning beeswax releases negative ions in the air that cleanse it and help those living with asthma and allergies breathe easier.

SANDSPUR FARMS “While the veggies are growing in the field and the pigs are grazing, we are enjoying the fall. Our cane stalks are ready if you need a fall decoration. You can tie 3 or 4 together and they’ll stand like an indian teepee. Also, we are in the process of canning pumpkin as an alternative to store bought. Which leads to pumpkin bread, of course! Both mini and full size loaves.
We’ve updated some pork inventory too. There’s still one more pork tenderloin available. This is the really tender part of a pork chop that is left whole since we made cubed pork out of the pork chops which utilizes the meaty part of chops. Pork grab bags are still available to fill with smoked bacon or smoked link sausage and pork chops and oh, wow my mouth just started watering! Thank you to each and everyone for all of your purchases that allow us to live the farm life.”

Pumpkin Contest Announcement

When I was a kid there were two things you did with Pumpkins: 1) You carved them for Halloween. 2) You made Thanksgiving and Christmas pies with them.

When I went to college I learned that people DECORATE for fall with them. This was a thrilling disovery and there was no shortage of outdoor fall décor in northern Indiana. By the time I moved back south the trend had traveled and was becoming popular.

Pumpkins are timeless and remain THE hot fall decorating item. Every year new uses for real, man-made and crafted pumpkins hit the public domain. New foods too!

So we want to have some fun with it this week. We’re asking that you share YOUR pumpkin crafts with us! Send photos by email or post them on our Facebook page this week. Cutoff time is Wednesday at 9 pm. Our vendors will vote on their favorite and the winner can pick up their prize at the Market on Friday, October 28.

This idea brought to you by Jennifer’s daughter who at fourteen years and nine months is now too old to carve pumpkins but still wanted to create something cute. She is using a real homegrown Sandspur Farms pumpkin.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome back SANDY VALLEY! We are pleased as punch to have Scotty and his beautiful vegetables back at the Market!

A hearty THANK YOU to everyone who donated to the Haiti Relief Project. It was a blessing to see the outpouring of generosity from our Market customers. Together we raised over $100 within an hour of Market opening and were able to send a total of $312 to the farmers in Petit Tros de Nippes. Several of you got to meet Christine Lamere who is the contact person on this project. She reports that our donation is just about right to fund a much needed tree nursery.

Please do not forget Haiti as we approach the holiday season. We plan to have a seed drive in the spring and are keeping the donation listings on the Market for anyone who may have missed last week’s drive and wants to help. If this is all new to you please visit here for more information.

Viki Richter will be managing the market this Friday, October 28 as Ros is called to family duty out of town.

Be sure mark December 1 on your calendar. That is the day for Christmas Open House and our Market vendors will be here in person with fresh seasonal produce, samples of products and a wonderful assortment of local, handmade food and gift items to get your Christmas season off to a good start.

SPECIAL MARKET EDITION

Haiti Relief Issue

The Wiregrass was thankfully spared the devastation that Hurricane Matthew brought to our country, but our neighbors in the Caribbean were not so fortunate. Haiti in particular was hit hard barely 2 years ago by an earthquake, and now with Matthew having leveled much of the country the needs are astronomical.

Market customer, Chris Lamere, is spearheading an effort to help rural farmers in Haiti and this week the Market is matching all donations made this week to help the farmers of Petit Trou de Nippes rebuild both local infrastructure and their farms. This means that if you donate $10, the farmers will receive $20. We hope you’ll read Chris’s letter and check out the young couple who have adopted these farmers and are going back in a few days.

We have made it easy for you to donate. There are several new Market “items” of donations in several amounts to choose from. Whatever you donate will added to your invoice total and matched by the Market.

There are other things we as a market community can do as well. The people of Petit Trou will be needing both tree and vegetable seeds going forward as they rebuild. Please start NOW saving topical tree seeds, especially mango and avocado seeds if possible. If anyone has any 2016 seed they don’t anticipate using in the near future it could help save lives and help rebuild the lives and economy of this village. Chris is a regular at the Market and has volunteered to mail all seeds we collect.

CBC News “There’s Nothing Left”

“Thank you for allowing me to present this idea to you.  After Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti so hard, I was looking for a way to help that would be localized and targeted to the specific needs of the Haitians.  I came across a couple with an amazing story that actually started with the devastating earthquake in 2010.  Since then, they have created and nurtured a project which has brought together around 30 small farmers in the village of Petit Trou de Nippes.  These are not farmers that use heavy machinery to help them work, either.  They dig roots up by hand, build retention ponds by hand and water with water pails when the small generator quits on them.  The efforts were successful in helping those farmers in the village come together and work to improve their lands, their lives and the small economy around them.  In fact, those efforts were so successful that prominent Haitian politicians had reached out to find ways to duplicate those methods around the country.  Hurricane Matthew has destroyed about 80% of the village and eradicated most of the agricultural accomplishments they had been able to make.  Mackenzy and Kirsty are returning to Haiti in less than two weeks to start the arduous task of rebuilding.
I hope you will read their blog to fully understand what they have done and what they have ahead of them now.  https://haitiansforchange.wordpress.com
I thought that the participants in our Market might think the same way that I do: that it is the perfect match for us to support Mackenzy’s Vision.  A local sustainable market reaching out to another in need.  In the immediate future, they are in need of funds to secure basic necessities, food and shelter.  They will also need certain help to re-establish the farming community itself, such as rebuilding a seed supply.  The Haitians are a resilient people and particularly the people of Petit Trou.  If anyone is interested in donating organic or heirloom seeds, they can contact me and I will cover the cost of shipping to Haiti.

For donations of funds, people can visit the blog site listed above or  https://freefunder.com/campaign/Haiti-Hurricane-Relief

Thank you,
Chris Lamere"

RICHTER FARMS Zimmermans said this about Red Wattle pork chops: “The flavor is rich, herbaceous, even a little sweet. It packs more flavor than I’ve ever had in a pork chop. The crowning glory of Red Wattle pork, however, is its fat. It marbles the meat and wraps the chop in a soft, opaque band. When cooked it melts within the meat and softens its edge to a luscious, lip-smacking bite. This is melt-in-your mouth fat, the kind of succulent experience you expect in great steaks and some cured meats.  It’s never a sensation I’d experienced in a pork chop until I met this one. The pork comes from hogs that are raised impeccably. The pigs are not confined, have access to the outdoors, and never receive antibiotics or hormones. This lifestyle is good for the pigs, but it doesn’t make for uniform pork—the chops may vary a bit from piece to piece, rather than being identical.”

SANDSPUR FARMS “I hope everyone enjoyed the samples of our “pig-pickin’ cake.” We do have it available for sale as well.“

This and That from Ros

What a glorious day to be at the Market! I arrived at Dothan Nurseries early yesterday to find our tent surrounded by HUNDREDS (well maybe not but a LOT for sure!) of potted mums! It was such a lovely sight that the routine tasks involving bags, coolers and checking off invoices begged to wait. Add the hint of crisp in the air, sweet breezes and good company as people came and went and it was probably the most perfect place in the city.

Let me encourage you to enjoy the outdoors a little this month at the Nursery. It truly is one of the loveliest places in Dothan with no end of indoor and outdoor inspiration. Even if you don’t have a green thumb and kill plants by looking at them there are still many things to get your creative juices going. Be sure to thank JD and the staff for their vision and support of Dothan’s ONLY Sustainable Farmer’s Market.

We are back to a WEEKLY schedule till mid November. If you have not checked it yet, our homepage now lists the Market Schedule.

Last but not least, WELCOME GINTHER FARMS! After last week’s article about how chicken molts affect egg production (explaining why several of us can’t offer many eggs!) it seemed God saw our need as the Ginther’s young chickens are blessing them, and now us prolifically! We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know this lovely family as much as we enjoy knowing them.

RICHTER FARMS “Red Wattles are an old breed of pig that was raised for flavor, not fashion. A century or two ago you’d have found Red Wattle pork on tables in New Orleans where they were a popular pig, sporting meat that could pair well with the region’s full-flavored cooking. Today you might find Red Wattle in a few restaurants in New York and a couple other lucky cities. There has been almost no supply for home cooks.” Zingermans

Market at Dothan is OPEN

This Week:

Just when we thought we couldn’t bear the heat anymore we woke up to a cool, pleasant morning this week and the whole region let out a long collective sigh . . . fall has finally come to the Wiregrass!

And with it the Market is resuming weekly sales. We hope you are as excited as we are. One of the things we have done in hopes of helping everyone stay on top of the market schedule is to post it on our homepage. So anytime you are unsure when you can or can’t order, it’s there for you.

Viki Richter has provided us a GREAT article about egg production this week and several vendors have stuff going on. We hope you’ll enjoy their efforts.

Feathers & Eggs

Seems everyone loves fresh farm eggs, they are tasty, prettier than plain old store bought white eggs and fresher too! While you can buy eggs all year at the grocery stores that is not easily the case for farm fresh eggs. Chickens like mammals shed seasonally but for chickens they shed their feathers in what is called molting. During the early fall chickens start their molts getting ready for the cold winter with a fresh set of feathers. (Our place looks like a massive pillow fight took place!!!) Because of the molting the energy needed to put on new feathers takes away from the egg production which is greatly decreased or stops altogether leading to a shortage of eggs. Laying resumes anywhere from a month to three months after they have new feathers. The grocery store eggs are available all year long because chickens lay and molt according to how much daylight- longer days more eggs! So factory farms leave the lights on 24/7 fooling the chickens which shortens their lives, they need to have down time just like we do!

Cool temperatures invite us to enjoy the season by dining outdoors like they do in Norway during their short summers. Rustic décor such as this can be easily transitioned to Christmas by replacing pumpkins and berries with poinsettias and greenery.

RICHTER FARMS Pastured Red Wattle Pork. Red Wattle is an old heritage breed that does not do well in today’s mega-farm agricultural environment, but thrives in pastures living in a family farm environment. …”red wattles produce what is possibly the best tasting pork in the world. In blind taste tests, they have bested many other breeds of pig. Their meat is deep red and interlaced with rich veins of fat. When cooked the fat liquefies, imbuing the meat with moisture and a complex broth that seems perfectly balanced to appeal to every carnivorous neuron that still pulses in our primitive brain centers. To eat properly roasted red wattle pork unadorned by spices and condiments is to partake of one of the greatest and purest culinary delights” Greenfire Farms

SANDSPUR FARMS We have added more meat bundles! If you’re wanting to split a half with a friend or family member, we will be more than glad to divide it evenly between the two. Even if we need to throw in an extra pack of sausage or bacon. Don’t hesitate to email or call me if you have any other questions. As for the winter veggies, they are looking good.  We missed the hail storm that Marianna received last weekend so we’re blessed on that. We are looking forward to the collards, mustard and turnip greens. Not to mention the sweet carrots and other veggies. We will also be planting some spinach just as soon as it cools off a little bit more. Thank you again for ordering from our family farm. Be sure and like our Facebook page for exciting updates.
