ONE WOMAN’S STORY

The name in this account has been changed and the story is so typical of the powerful impact diet makes on health that it could actually be many of our local Market customers! (It’s not.) We hope it will encourage you to examine what does and does not work for you and replace your own “no” items with “yes” foods that you love and love you back by building your health.

At her first visit to a nutritionist, Ann (53), just had one goal: “I need to get healthy!” Her cholesterol was elevated (including triglycerides), and she had taken Lipitor for five years. Her blood pressure had been elevated in the past. She had acid reflux and had been on Zantac for 15 years.
She slept poorly and experienced sleep apnea and extreme fatigue. She was taking hormone replacement therapy for hormonal headaches that had plagued her for years. She had experienced swollen, painful joints for many years, which had developed into osteoarthritis. Her bowels tended toward constipation, and she craved bread and sweets.
The nutritionist noted her systemic inflammation, water retention, swelling, and constipation and suspected a food sensitivity. She suggested that Ann eliminate corn, dairy, and wheat from her diet; keep track of her body’s reaction to the changes; and then gradually introduce these foods one at a time.

Elimination diet
This is one of many publications that can walk one through the process Ann used to determine her food sentisivities.

When Ann returned four weeks later, she had determined through the elimination diet that she had a corn sensitivity. Since eliminating corn, she reported feeling much better, and the pain in her back and legs had diminished. Her constipation was relieved and much of the swelling and fluid retention also improved. Ann reported that “I lost only five pounds, but I feel smaller.”
Returning at eight weeks, Ann reported that the, “changes have been easy.” She had lost 20 pounds and her energy was much improved: “I wake up ready for the day.” She was walking a mile and a half each day and her cravings for sugar had also diminished, much to her delight. She reported feeling more in control of her eating.
At 12 weeks, Ann said the changes were becoming habit. “I feel so much better.” Her energy continued to improve; she had lost a total of 27 pounds, and she experienced less pain.

Nightshade substitutions
Confession Time: your M@D manager is learning to live without foods in the nightshade family. Like any other training, learning to replace something bad with something wonderful and good is a key component to success.

AVALON FARMS:

Success! At last, one farm experiment proved successful. Hallelujah! We had several complete crop failures this year, garlic and winter squash were two biggies, but the trial of yard long beans has been a success. They have been growing since spring, made all summer, and now after a brief break, they are producing again. What they’ll do next year is yet to be seen, but I’m calling this a successful  proof of concept.

I want to say thank you to you all for your support during this difficult season. Farming is not for the faint of heart and has definitely tested my resolve this year. Let’s all move into a new growing season together.

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.

I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.

II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION
It takes all of us working together to keep everything running & everyone safe!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
