November 7, 2020 M@D Newsletter - We're Open for Orders!

November

Market at Dothan is open to accept orders.
Orders close Tuesday at 5pm
We use the word “Sustainable” over “Organic”.
You can grow organic without being sustainable, but you cannot be sustainable without utilizing organic practices.

A WEEK LIKE TO OTHER

The election is behind us and whether you are mourning or rejoicing over the latest news it does not diminish the fact that LIFE WILL GO ON. Just a little bit ago I saw a satire article about how the red party was demonstrating by going about life as usual.

Those words, “life as usual” . . . they don’t mean what they did a year ago! A year ago we didn’t have to stay 6 feet apart. A year ago walking into a bank wearing a mask would probably get you arrested. Now they won’t let you in without one! A year ago health department mandated quarantine was unheard of but it happens all the time now.

So while “usual” can be debated, it does not decrease the fact that in this election we were all winners before the candidates were announced. It has nothing to do with party affiliations and everything to do with the fact that we were born into an imperfect country that is continually reaching and seeking to be better than we are now. And it has everything to do with the fact that our founding fathers wisely put together a system of checks and balances to make sure we don’t get too crazy in either direction of what that looks like.

To further drive that point home I’m inviting each of you to read this ESSAY written by a relative. Whether you are one of those who rejoice or mourn over how things are going, my hope is that it will provide insight and (if you’re a mourner) encouragement.

HORTONS FARM It’s been a busy week here. Our honey was delisted for a few weeks because we quite literally ran out of both containers and honey. That’s all taken care of now as we’ve always done things a bit differently harvesting honey in the fall, and this time around having to rethink packaging with the covid price increases.

Ta-Da – NEW PACKAGING!

In the interest of transparency, the glass jars on the left will be gussied up for the holidays with bulk order discounts available (photos and listings coming soon). The plastic jar to the right is our new 1 lb bottle, sans label.

In unrelated news, our chickens have started molting which means decreased egg production. Its probably coincidence but our young rooster has just discovered his voice as well and seems to be practicing his funny “crow” all all the time. Both are normal chicken life events that we will just take in stride, but we won’t list any eggs this week as it’s too soon to guess how few will be available.

AVALON FARMS:

In a week’s time, the sugar snap peas have gone from just “cracking the soil” to little plants. Amazing!

The girls certainly are enjoying their fresh pasture area. So many new places to scratch up tasty treats! Ooh, there goes a grasshopper! Yummy! (A varied diet makes tasty eggs!!)

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.

I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.

II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION
It takes all of us working together to keep everything running & everyone safe!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
