Grower Notes
We’ve lost track of all the questions asking if M@D is doing different events we’ve been involved with in the past. You know the answer, we can’t because of the virus. I have to tell you, my fingers are DELIGHTED to type what follows!
Dothan Nurseries will soon be announcing their annual Christmas Open House. It will not be held on Thursday as has been done in the past but all day on a Saturday. This will allow people more time as they come and go thereby reducing the crowd at any given time and allowing for proper social distancing.
Great plans are underway for live music, giveaways, etc during the day and of course Dothan Nurseries will have some fabulous sales going on as well.
In the short time since the decision was finalized six of our regular M@D vendors have committed to participating and more will be joining us in the weeks to come. We will be working hard to bring you a great variety of food/farm/gift items.
So MARK YOUR CALENDAR and make plans to bless your friends and family with Fresh, Local, Sustainable goods and gift items from right here in the Wiregrass.
PECANS
Here in the deep south we have PECANS. They are so versatile and so delicious. Trees are everywhere, and they are considered a seasonal cash crop. On years when nature does not favor their production prices are high, and in years where they are abundant, like 2020, those who pick them up don’t earn as much.
The trees are oblivious to all of this and continue to do their jobs of giving us one of the most delicious of all nuts. We hope this section inspires you to use them in some different and creative ways.
MARKET CHITCHAT
Holiday Schedule Announcement: We will be closed the week of Thanksgiving. Market will not open on Saturday, Nov. 21 so there will be no order pickup on (Black) Friday, Nov. 27. Regular ordering will resume on Saturday, Nov. 28.
In December we will open for orders on Dec. 5 and Dec. 12, then be closed till January 2, 2021. We are sticking with the normal ordering and pickup schedule during Open House.
GROWER NOTES
AVALON FARMS:
Garden remodeling courtesy of hurricane Zeta. Thankfully I had not planted transplants in that yet! They would probably been ripped up too.
Finally putting a few seeds in the ground. Sugar snap peas are “cracking the ground”, meaning the seeds are sprouting and pushing up on the soil. Going to plant assorted turnips, radishes and greens this weekend. The weather forecast shows lows of 37 Saturday and Sunday night. That should slow down the army worms and give the plants a chance.
Enjoying our first real fall weekend!

Our COVID protocol is still in place for everyone who wants curbside service.
I. Order Payment:
1. Voluntarily prepay by 6 pm Thursday if possible using this PAYPAL link. This eliminates passing paper currency back and forth or handling debit/credit cards on site. Your invoice will be marked PAID and pickup is fast and easy. In the event of undelivered items you will be issued a Market credit that will apply to your next order.
2. Debit/Credit – One of us will briefly step within 6 feet for you to put your card in the chip reader. We do our best to avoid touching your card or you touching the equipment which means we sign an “x” for your signature.
3. Cash and Checks – You may hand them to us. Exact change is preferred if using cash to prevent a lot of passing back and forth. If you choose curbside pickup you are welcome to put payment in your trunk/tailgate as that would eliminate the need to come near your window.
II. Order Delivery:
1. Curb Service: Please pull up next to the Market Shed. We will direct traffic a little bit if needed. Have your trunk/ hatchback open and we’ll load you up!
2. Walk Up Pickup: Please do not come inside. When we see you coming we’ll put your order near the entrance and step back for you to claim it. This system works really well for those of you wishing to get extra veggies that may be available.
3. Regardless of how you choose to accept your Market order please know that we make every effort to practice safe distancing and ask that you do the same.
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
